Wanted: 1-5 acres of land for planting near Exeter or Teignmouth

February 10th, 2008 by admin

I’m now looking to buy 1 to 5 acres of land for planting and growing trees and other crops near Exeter in Devon or Teignmouth.

No planning permission is required or sought, this is just a long term growing project on amenity land. The land should be south facing, without severe gradients, and with vehicle access.
If you have anything like this which you are looking to sell, please call 07967 221 029 or contact rob@sustainablewoodlands.co.uk.

Woodland for Sale: Scottish Highlands

November 10th, 2007 by admin

NEW WOODLAND FOR SALE IN SCOTLAND

Scottish woodland real estate

Half acre plots of beautiful woodland in the Scottish Highlands. Ideal land for relaxing, camping, practising forestry and logging. In the future the value of these plots should rise considerably. We are able to offer deals on a number of adjoining plots purchased at the same time to make a larger site.

The Woodland Sites being offered may be suitable for leisure use or future development. The land is currently not zoned for development though temporary structures are normally permitted. However, planning permission may be possible in the future and so the plots offer an interesting long term speculative investment in an increasingly popular area which has relatively easy access but is still far from the ‘madding crowd’. We make no restriction on your use of the site - except that we will ask you to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of the land for the benefit of all purchasers.

The wording of the covenant is as follows:

The purchaser hereby covenants with the vendor that the land shall not be used in such a way as to create a nuisance to the neighbouring owners (including the vendor) and specifically the purchasers and successors in title shall not:

1. discharge a shotgun or firearm on the land;
2. use the land for any sort of racing with any vehicle;
3. use the land for a commercial campsite;
4. use the land in a way which will damage the access tracks.

The purchaser and successors in title shall not sell the land except as a whole specifically not in such a way that it could be registered or owned in separate titles or in separate ownerships.

Rights of vehicular access and water/mineral rights included.

The Earth Care Manual: A Permaculture Handbook for Britain and Other Temperate Countries

November 10th, 2007 by admin

Whilst costly at around £40, this book is really the last word for permaculture enthusiasts in temperate climates. Leaving no stone unturned, Patrick Whitefield, one of the UK’s foremost practitioners of permaculture, explores everything from building design, to composting, food growing, agroforestry, and forest gardens.

Packed with useful tables and information about yields, (like which trees make for good bee forage, the yield of walnut trees, the various merits and uses of different type of timber) it’s packed with a lifetime of knowledge, research and gentle understanding of the rhythms of nature.

Both extraordinary in breadth and depth it’s the kind of book that never really gets filed away on a bookshelf. An to be honest, I ask myself, why would I ever want to put it away?

Woodnet

November 9th, 2007 by admin

Although sadly only for people in South East England (but they will post copies elsewhere) Woodnet is an invaluable resource for timber growers and wood users.

Whether you are looking to source timber of various sorts, you want to advertise, or you deal with the manufactured products of wood in some way this site will be useful to you.

The Woodland Way: A Permaculture Approach to Sustainable Woodland Management

November 9th, 2007 by admin

The Woodland Way: A Permaculture Approach to Sustainable Woodland ManagementEvery now and then I come across a book that is a real cracker. For those of you who don’t know who Ben Law is, you might have seen him on what has arguably become the most talked straw bale build ever, featured on the Channel 4 program Grand Designs.

The Woodland Way is the culmination of many years of Ben Law’s experience at Prickly Nut Wood. When I went on a coppicing course at the Green Wood Centre, this was on the reading list.

This one book to taught me the fundamentals about managing coppice as part of a small woodland, learning about listening to nature and work in tune with it, as well as increasing yields, choosing types of trees to grow, examining the potential products that can be manufactured, and generally being a woodsman.

I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone thinking about buying or managing a coppice, or simply getting into coppicing. I haven’t found any other book which can match it.

Short Rotation Coppice Research

March 27th, 2007 by admin

Here is some great information from Forest Reserch about short rotation coppice specifically as a fuel.

I read about this first in Patrick Whitefield’s The Earth Care Manual: A Permaculture Handbook for Britain and Other Temperate Countries.

It’s an intensive method of farming poplar and willow - but more sustainable than other forms of power generation.

Read the full report here.
